Clément
Born in 1992, Clément is a painter based in Paris. He started his higher education with formal training to prepare the competitive entrance into top French business schools. After three years of studying philosophy, mathematics, history and economics, he was admitted to HEC Paris in 2013.
In parallel with his business studies, Clément then spent the next five years delving into art history, learning traditional painting techniques and partaking in various exhibition projects — both as an artist and as an exhibitor. In 2015, Clément did an exchange semester at Trinity College in Dublin, during which he studied art history full time, with a focus on Northern painting (Dutch and Flemish) and Italian painting, sculpture and architecture. Around these years, Clément also learnt academic oil-painting by copying the works of old masters under the tutelage of the artist Élise Chaigneau (Atelier Bella Copia). He soon took part in group exhibitions across the French capital: notably a show organised by students of EAC and a show by the art curators of Nouvelle Peinture Figurative. Clément’s works from that period were inspired by a wide array of influences across the history of painting: Renaissance masters such as Raphael, Bellini and Mantegna on one hand, Picasso, Dalí and Francis Bacon on the other.
Clément graduated from HEC Paris in 2018 (Master in Management, Media, Art & Creation). The same year, he organised an exhibition of the works of the artists Florian Eymann and Romuald Martin alongside the curators of Nouvelle Peinture Figurative. In 2019, Clément then showcased his own paintings and works on paper in a group exhibition entitled La chair que l’on montre aux curieux by the art collective YEA at 59 Rivoli. After that, the artist stopped producing for a while, taking up work as a mathematics teacher in Parisian Catholic schools and reading philosophy classics (mainly Plato, Nicolas of Cusa, Descartes, Spinoza, Kant and Hegel) to deepen his understanding of metaphysics. Since 2022, Clément has renewed his focus on painting.
